Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Potosi, MO.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Potosi which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
