Methadone is an opioid and can be taken at an outpatient clinic licensed to administer the med, which is taken daily as a pill or liquid. The cost of the drug is approximately one hundred and fifty dolloars a month. Buprenorphine is also an opiate based med, and is in pill form often taken every other day. But different from Methadone which is only be dispensed in highly well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is around $300 per month for the generic version of the drug. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, which is a med which reverses the effects of opiates. A person taking this version of the drug, also known as Suboxone, would find it harder to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken daily, and costs about $450 monthly. Naltrexone is an additional med used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs aforementioned it is an opiate blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this medication as a monthly injection, which is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents an individual from experience high feelings from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 per month.
