Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Arcola, MS.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Arcola that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
