Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Columbus, MS.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Columbus that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
