Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Dumas, MS.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Dumas that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
