Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Grace, MS.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Grace which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
