Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Holcomb, MS.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Holcomb which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
