Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Holly Bluff, MS.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Holly Bluff which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
