Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Laurel, MS.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Laurel that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
