Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Randolph, MS.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Randolph which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
