Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Sibley, MS.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Sibley which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
