Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Toccopola, MS.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Toccopola that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
