Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Walnut Grove, MS.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Walnut Grove that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
