Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Choteau, MT.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Choteau which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
