Methadone maintenance is a type of treatment for clients in Power who are dependent on heroin or prescription opioid medications. This method of treatment has been in existence for decades now, and the general idea is that individuals are no longer involved in the drug abusing activities that was brought on by their addiction because the methadone that they are being administered satiates cravings and prevents withdrawal. Like heroin, methadone is a full opioid agonist which activates the same receptors in the brain as heroin. This is what makes methadone so successful as a substitute for heroin and prescription pain killers.
Clients enrolled in methadone maintenance have to take it every day to avoid withdrawal from the methadone itself. This might be logistically and financially difficult, but some people find it a better choice than a heroin addiction. However, people starting on methadone maintenance need to realize that methadone detox is considered far more challenging than even heroin detox and withdrawal. Once on a certain dosage of methadone, there are many detoxification programs that will not accept methadone maintenance clients because detox can be very difficult and rates of relapse are considerably high.
