IOP's consist of treatment which occurs more frequently than regular outpatient, where the person will take part in the treatment on a part time basis unless otherwise determined.
Intensive outpatient treatment normally consists of individual and group counseling meetings to continue to treat the person's addiction. Individual sessions will occur at least once a week, and group sessions can provide the peer support that is essential for long term sobriety. While in intensive outpatient treatment, clients work on improving relapse prevention skills, the management of every day challenges and vulnerabilities, and how to manage any discomforts and cravings. Some intensive outpatient treatment centers include family and couples/marriage counseling into the treatment process, which may be essential for clients who must rebuild their lives with their loved ones and family members.
