American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require rehabilitation for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely agreed to a diversion option to go to treatment instead of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is a definite need for a variety of service types to cover all of the various requirements of this client demographic, including substance abuse treatment services in native languages.
One of the problems that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Selma face is access to comprehensive treatment facilities, particularly those who live in secluded regions. Facilities providing addiction rehab services in rural regions often are not able to offer strategic planning aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this unique group of people including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with stakeholders and elders involved in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which treatment services are available to them through which facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been many grants approved in recent years to help pay for these types of rehab services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective recovery programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive treatment services delivered in their language which are performed by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
