Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Wheatland, ND.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Wheatland that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
