Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Hickman, NE.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Hickman that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
