Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Syracuse, NE.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Syracuse which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
