Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Western, NE.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Western that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
