Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Center Ossipee, NH.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Center Ossipee that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
