Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Conway, NH.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Conway which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
