Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Lochmere, NH.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Lochmere that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
