Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Walpole, NH.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Walpole which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
