Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - West Swanzey, NH.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in West Swanzey that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
