There are addiction programs offered in or near Estell Manor which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will instead no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do deliver a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and it is encouraged.
