Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Glasser, NJ.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Glasser that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will instead not become involved in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary services, and it is encouraged.
