There are programs available in or near Hibernia that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will instead no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do offer a small amount of counseling and therapy as secondary services, and it is recommended and encouraged.
