American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the various needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Highland Lakes face is access to comprehensive and effective services, especially those who reside in secluded areas. Programs providing drug and alcohol rehab services in rural regions often are not capable of offering strategic planning designed to meet the needs and demands of this special group of people including addiction treatment services in their language.
