Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Hillside, NJ.

There are recovery programs offered in or near Hillside that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally not engage in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do offer a small amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is encouraged.
