American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to receive rehab instead of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is a definite need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including substance abuse treatment programs in native languages.
