There are programs available in or near Orange which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will instead no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to handle the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and it is encouraged.
