There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Ridgefield that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
