Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Shrewsbury, NJ.

There are programs available in or near Shrewsbury that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary services, and this is encouraged.
