Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Clines Corners, NM.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Clines Corners which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
