American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need rehabilitation for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab in lieu of jail time. So therefore, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the various requirements of this client demographic, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Edgewood face is access to comprehensive treatment facilities, especially those who live in secluded regions. Facilities providing substance abuse treatment services in rural regions may not be set up to provide strategic planning aimed at meeting the needs of this special group of people including addiction rehabilitation services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can work with elders and stakeholders involved in mental health services for their region or tribe to determine which types of treatment services are available to them through which facilities, and which ones will be most effective for their scenario. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to cover these types of rehab services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effectively established programs which offer evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive rehab services delivered in their language which are performed by bi-lingual staff members.
