American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely agreed to a diversion option to go to treatment instead of jail time. So therefore, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the very unique needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Fruitland face is access to comprehensive rehab programs, particularly those who live in rural regions. Programs providing substance abuse rehabilitation services in rural areas may not be capable of offering support intended for the needs of this unique group of people including substance abuse treatment services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with elders and stakeholders involved in mental health services for their tribe or region to find out which types of treatment services are an option for them and through which facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been many grants offered in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effective recovery programs which offer evidence based treatment that also encompasses culturally sensitive rehab services including those in their language which are provided by bi-lingual staff members.
