Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Navajo Dam, NM.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Navajo Dam that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
