It is a fact that clients in rehabilitation for drug and alcohol addiction are more likely to smoke tobacco, 75% in fact. With that being said few programs address the situation as a primary addiction, even though the fact that helping people quit smoking during rehab is associated with a 25% higher chance the client will remain sober from drugs and alcohol. As a result, there are 'smoking not allowed' drug treatment centers in Navajo that enforce a smoking ban and most of them also provide nicotine addiction treatment.
While total bans on smoking are definitely not the norm, more and more rehabs are starting to enforce their own bans, but also state and local tobacco-free workplace mandates attempt to make rehabs completely smoke-free environments. In doing so, they avoid the need to develop and implement facility policies that are already legally in place and enforced legally by state and local agencies. Enforcing a ban on smoking may make hesitant potential clients who smoke starting treatment. At the same time it will help those who do choose a smoking not allowed alcohol and/or drug addiction rehab facility be better able to recover in a completely addiction and drug free environment.
