Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Alcove, NY.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Alcove that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
