American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to treatment instead of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the very unique requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment services in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Arcade face is access to effective services, particularly those who reside in rural regions. Programs providing addiction rehabilitation services in rural regions often are not capable of offering support intended for the needs of this distinctive group of people including addiction rehabilitation services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can work with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to figure out which services are available to them and through which treatment facilities, and which ones will work best for their particular situation. There have been many grants approved in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective recovery programs which offer evidence based treatment that also integrates culturally sensitive recovery services including those in their language which are performed by bi-lingual staff members.
