Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Arkport, NY.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Arkport that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
