Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Athol, NY.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Athol that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
