The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to advance the mental health of the U.S.. One of its obligations is the oversight of opioid treatment facilities, which are centers which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medications prescribed are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Ava are programs which are officially allowed to dispense the medications used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary services aside from medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment program can receive basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment facilities authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation facility is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every three years contingent upon the type of accreditation it has been granted.
