Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Belmont, NY.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Belmont that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
