Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Cadyville, NY.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Cadyville which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
