Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Callicoon Center, NY.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Callicoon Center that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
