Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Chatham, NY.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Chatham which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
