Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Chemung, NY.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Chemung which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
